What to do When You’re in a Car Accident in Salem, OR – Part I

Every day in America, 90 people lose their lives due to traffic collisions. More than 250 individuals are injured every hour. If you have been involved in an automobile accident in Salem, Oregon, or anywhere in America, there are several important things that should be done at the accident scene and soon afterward.

1) Stop. Never leave the scene of an accident, even if it is a minor one. The only exception to this rule occurs if you have been hit by another driver in a deserted or unsafe area. There have been instances where other drivers in similar situations have been victimized after exiting their vehicles in an unsafe area. Should this happen to you, you should drive to the nearest police station and report the accident.

2) Check on the other driver and all passengers. Call an ambulance if needed. The vehicles involved in the accident should remain where they are, unless they interfere with traffic.

3) Call the police. This is especially important if there is significant property damage or physical injury. When law enforcement officers arrive at the scene, ask that a police report be filed. You may need a police report to file an insurance claim. If possible, get the name and badge number of any responding officer.

4) Exchange and collect information with the other driver. You should obtain the name, phone number, license plate, insurance information and driver’s license number. If possible, get the names and phone numbers of any passengers and witnesses as well.
