Pedestrian Accidents on the Rise

Auto Insurance Covers Pedestrian Injuries

Wilsonville pedestrian injured just adding to the shocking statistics that in 2010, 4280 pedestrians were killed and approximately 70,000 people were injured in traffic crashed in the United States. On average, a pedestrian was killed every two hours and injured every eight minutes in traffic crashes. When you consider the facts, it causes one to think what if that happens to me or a loved one.

I do not believe that most people realize that as a pedestrian you are covered by automobile insurance that covers members of the household in which you reside. For example, if you are hit by a car as a pedestrian and injured, the Personal Injury Protection coverage on your automobile insurance (or the automobile insurance of someone in your household) will cover your medical bills and lost wage in the same way the insurance would have covered those damages if you had been a covered automobile when you were injured.

Your automobile insurance policy will be the policy to cover medical bills first. If you do not have automobile insurance, but you do have health insurance, your health insurance will cover your medical bills. If you do not have automobile insurance and do not have health insurance, the insurance of the driver who caused the accident will cover the medical bills under the Personal Injury Protection provision of the driver’s policy. If you have automobile insurance, but your medical bills exceed your Personal Injury Protection limits, you may be able to obtain additional coverage by “stacking” the at-fault driver’s Personal Injury Protection on top of yours.

Obtaining appropriate medical care is of utmost importance following a personal injury. If you are unable to access the appropriate insurance to pay for the medical care, you may not get the medical care you need. This will not only be a detriment to your physical health, but also to the value of your claim for compensation for your pain and suffering. These are some of the reasons it is important to hire a personal injury attorney as soon as you can after you are in an accident.
