Bicycling: Making the Road Safe For Everyone

With the summer sunshine, there are more bicyclists on the road this time of year. As a result, drivers should be particularly cautious of bicycles on the roadways. As a general rule, drivers should look for bicycles much like how they look for other vehicles. This includes checking your blind spot when changing lanes or making a turn. When passing a bicyclist, you should make sure that you have sufficient space to comfortably pass them.

When driving at night, drivers should be especially careful to look for bicyclists, as they will be less visible. Drivers should look for lights and reflective wear when driving at night.

Bad weather also can impact bicyclists more than drivers. When the roads are icy or it is a particularly windy day, drivers should be aware of the added challenge for biking on those days and give bicyclists even more space.

Also, when getting out of your vehicle, make sure to check for bicyclists coming down the road. A bicyclist can be injured by your open car door.
